Pitch’s communications interns – where are they now?

January 17, 2023

Are you considering a career in the communications industry? We don’t blame you! We may be bias but we’re firm believers that communications and public relations careers offer   great variety, especially if you’re chasing a role that has challenges and opportunities galore.

At Pitch we have been lucky to mentor some incredible PR, business and creative industries students from some of Queensland’s top universities that share our passion for all things comms.

Working closely with our team members on a range of projects, including filming brand videos on-location with clients, creating social media content for our favourite not-for-profits and writing SEO-friendly website content, our interns get a real taste of daily life working at a full-service communications agency.

And, because we never host more than one intern at a time, we dedicate all of our attention to ensuring our mentees have a valuable learning experience with constant access to our most experienced team members and opportunities to try an exciting variety of tasks. It truly is the best way to get a taste for how public relations jobs really are!

But that’s enough about us! Let’s take a look at some of the amazing students we’ve had the pleasure of hosting recently and check in with them to see what they’ve been up to in the early years of their marketing, legal and public relations careers.

Michaela – from comms to courtroom

Joining the Pitch team in late-2020 from The University of Queensland, Michaela discovered us through a mutual connection and former employee and decided to reach out to express her interest in completing work experience.

Michaela was in her second last year of studying a Bachelor of Journalism and Communications, majoring in PR, and undertook her internship at Pitch to soak up the valuable experiences of agency-life.

Her skills and go-getter attitude were evident from day one, which led to Michaela officially joining the team as a part-time Social Media and Content Producer!

Things really got interesting from there and Michaela started sinking her teeth into some amazing projects including managing social media campaigns, producing regular storytelling video content for a variety of clients and pitching stories to media.

We were lucky to have Michaela as part of the team for a year, and even got to celebrate her graduation.

Nowadays, Michaela is living in Melbourne as she pursues both of her passions, communications and law, where she is completing a graduate law degree and working at SEC Newgate Australia. We can’t wait to see where she goes from here!

Erin – finding her passion for purpose

We have one of our lovely clients to thank for introducing us to Erin! While studying a Bachelor of Communication, majoring in advertising and PR, Erin joined us in her final year to see if a public relations job was right for her.

With experience in retail, sales, admin and customer service, Erin already knew she was eager to discover the world of communications, content and social media management.

During her internship, Erin created insightful and inspiring content for clients’ social media channels, undertook media monitoring and reporting activities, and wrote long-form articles – talk about variety!

After three amazing months with the Pitch team, Erin landed herself a role that’s very close to her heart… PR and Social Media Coordinator at Cancer Council Queensland.

Now Erin is putting her experience to work, helping to raise awareness and funds for the thousands of lives impacted by cancer. We couldn’t be prouder!!

Sabrina – harnessing her marketing prowess

A passionate storyteller with a flair for journalism, Sabrina was in her final year of a Bachelor of Communication, majoring in Journalism at QUT.

Having already completed numerous editorial and journalism internships at publications including Style Magazines, Brisbane Times and Queensland Magazine, Sabrina was keen to try her hand at the ‘dark side’ of comms – PR!

Producing a variety of written content for clients, including blogs, EDMs and social media posts, Sabrina quickly found a new love for the creative side of comms, which led to her pursuing a role in marketing.

Only a few months after completing her 4-month internship at Pitch, Sabrina joined the team at BT Marketing, a boutique retail and shopping centre marketing agency, where she produces engaging social media content for clients across Brisbane and beyond!

It didn’t take long for Sabrina to take on a new challenge at BT Marketing with the role of Marketing and Digital Executive. Get it, girl!
